The Rodin Museum, four hundred metres away

Rodin Museum
The best complement to a morning at Les Invalides. The Hôtel Biron, at 77 rue de Varenne, is a five-minute walk from the south entrance of the Dôme. The ticket opens the museum and the sculpture garden, and is valid for several hours from first entry. It is not the same institution as Les Invalides: it is a separate booking.

Why the two go so well together

Les Invalides is a place of stone, steel and noise: cannon, armour, captured flags. Rodin is a garden. You come out of the two World Wars department, walk up the rue de Varenne, push open a gate, and find yourself in front of The Thinker with roses around you. The contrast is so sharp that it does you good, and it fills an afternoon with no transport at all.

There is a real link too, not just a geographical one. The Hôtel Biron was a boarding house for artists before it was a museum; Rodin had his studio there and left his collection to the State on condition that the house became his museum. The whole quarter, between the rue de Varenne and the rue de Grenelle, is made of these 18th-century mansions, and it is the finest walk in the 7th.

Local tip

Do Les Invalides in the morning, have lunch on the rue de Bourgogne or the rue Cler, then Rodin in the early afternoon. The garden faces south and takes the light late in the day: that is the right order, not the other way round.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Les Invalides ticket open the Rodin Museum?

No. They are two different institutions and two different tickets, even though they are neighbours.

How long do you need for Rodin?

An hour and a half to two hours with the garden, less if you only do the house.

Can you do both on the same day?

Yes, and it makes the best day in the quarter: Les Invalides in the morning, Rodin in the afternoon.
